PROVO, Utah (News4Utah) – A Utah wife and mother breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after her husband is sentenced to probation.
Back in May, Gaven and Karree Beckstrom’s 3-week-old son Cooper ended up in the hospital with severe head trauma and fractured bones.
Utah County Prosecutor, Craig Johnson, would later learn Cooper suffered that trauma as Gaven tried to burp him during a diabetic episode.
He lowered the charge to neglect and requested Beckstrom spend a year in prison.
But after learning that punishment would leave Karree and baby Cooper without insurance, Johnson went against his original request for the first time in his career.
“Seeing what impact this was going to have on her and more importantly her son who was the victim in this, how could I stand up and deprive him of his medical coverage by an action that was going to unintentionally going to cause that,” said Johnson, Utah County prosecutor.
“I’m grateful for the state looking out for my family first,” said Gaven Beckstrom, defendant.
Beckstrom will be on probation for the next five years. During that time, the judge said he must comply with a plan from the Department of Child and Family Services, follow his doctor’s orders when it comes to managing his diabetes and complete 100 hours of community service.
