MAPLETON, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A Utah County family of four is dead after what police are calling an apparent murder suicide.
Police in Mapleton say all of the victims died from gunshot wounds and had been dead for days.
The victims were identified as Timothy Griffith, ,45, Jessica Griffith, 42, Samantha Badel, 16, and Alexendre Griffith, 5.
A concerned neighbor reported there had not been any activity from the home for a few days. The father’s employer also told police he had not shown up to work in several days.
Police arrived at the home Thursday night and found the entire family and their dog shot to death.
“Had been noticing for a couple days that the cars hadn’t moved from the home-
that the lights had been off for a few days… They hadn’t seen any activity,” said Mapleton Police Department Chief John Jackson.
Neighbors told ABC4 Utah Timothy Griffith, the father in the home, worked for Nestle. Police say the family had just moved to the area from Switzerland in July. Samantha is the biological daughter of Jessica and stepdaughter of Timothy. Samantha was a sophomore at Maple Mountain High School. Services have been made available to the students there.
Stacy Bryant, a teacher at Mapleton Junior High School, came over to place flowers at the home she drives past every day on the way to work. She says the shocking crime has students upset.
“This is heavy stuff to be talking about at that age and we hope as teachers we can just kind of guide them through it and have hope and just not get lost in the sadness of it all,” said Bryant.
The bodies of the family are at the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office. Once the examinations are complete. Police say its report will shed more light on what investigators believe happened in the home.
