Falling rocks near Pineview Dam critically injure driver

Local News

WEBER COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Deputies responded to reports of falling rocks near Pineview Dam Spillway Saturday afternoon.

Lt. Cortney Ryan with the Weber County Sheriffs office says rocks fell and hit a car around 1:15 p.m. Saturday evening. Ryan says rocks fell from the mountain side and went through the windshield of a truck traveling west on Highway 158.

After the rock hit the truck the driver lost control and crashed into the mountain side. Officials believe the rock weights near 150 pounds.

The driver sustained serious injuries from the rock and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries.

Officials say the recent snow and the warmer temperatures dislodged the rock causing it to fall from the cliff area.

UDOT responded to clear the area of rocks and will be monitoring the area. While deputies were on scene assisting with the crash one deputy’s truck was hit by falling rocks, no other injuries occurred on scene.
