SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) Travelers flying out of any Utah airport will experience stronger carry-on baggage security screenings.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) wants to take a closer look at the electronics travelers plan on taking on an airplane.

“They went through my backpack and had to take everything out. I did have a camera in there and a tablet in there. She said this is why we are having the search,” Crystal Farley said, traveler from Arkansas.

New procedures require travelers to put all electronics larger than a cell phone in a bin for x-ray screening. It’s a measure to catch potential threats in carry-on bags.

“This is the first broad-scale screening procedure that’s being rolled out at every airport across the country in more than ten years. It is pretty significant,” TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers said.

While in Utah now, procedures will go country-wide early next year.

More bags are expected to be examined by TSA officers, so plan on longer security lines.

“It’s sad that that is what we need to do, but if we need to do it, I get that people are indeed trying to sneak stuff in that way, obviously it is something that needs to be addressed. Is it inconvenient? Yes,” Farley said.

“Honestly, if you think of the potential consequences and repercussions, I’d rather be inconvenienced,” Jessica Ulery said, traveler from Indiana.

Dankers says there will be no changes to what travelers can bring through the checkpoint.
