WEST JORDAN (ABC4 News) – An elderly man has died after a multi-vehicle crash in West Jordan on Bangerter Highway.

A West Valley City police cruiser was among several vehicles involved in the crash on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on southbound Bangerter near 6500 South and forced the closure of the highway between 6200 South and 7000 South.

West Valley City Police Department said 90-year-old Ronald Newsome was driving the wrong way when he hit the officer as he passed through West Jordan on his way home after training.

“We are thankful to report that the sergeant is being checked out, but appears to be ok. We send our best wishes to all injured in this crash,” said the department in a tweet.

West Jordan police said six people were taken to the hospital.  It is unclear why Newsome was driving the wrong way at the time, but police say he succumbed to his injuries overnight.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they become available.
