UPDATE (10 p.m.) According to Utah Highway Patrol the cause of why the power lines went down is currently under investigation. All road closures have been removed and power has been restored to most of the residents.
SANDY, Utah (News4Utah) – Downed power lines are forcing the shut down of the freeway in Sandy, and thousands of residents are now without power Sunday night across multiple cities.
According to Utah Department of Transportation, the freeway is shut down on southbound I-15 near 9500 South due to the downed power lines. UHP said they believe a transformer blew, causing the issue.
Traffic is backed up to Murray as cars are being diverted off onto the I-215.
Additionally Rocky Mountain Power has reported over 3400 residents are also without power in Bluffdale, Draper, Riverton, Sandy and South Jordan. The estimated time of restoral is 11 p.m. You can continue to check on the power outage on their website Rockymountainpower.net.
