SALT LAKE COUNTY (ABC4 News) – A Kearns man faces a slew of charges and police said he was sexually involved with a teenage girl and threatened her if she didn’t oblige.

According to a probable cause statement, in February, a woman reported to police she believed her 16-year-old granddaughter was “engaging in sexual relations” with 40-year-old Patrick Mecham.

During the course of an investigation, police said they uncovered text messages from Mecham to the teen between January 2018 through March 2019. The messages allegedly stated that Mecham wanted to have sex with the teen.

Police said during that same time period, there were also several text messages discussing the sale of marijuana and that Mecham wanted to smoke marijuana with the girl.

According to the indictment, when police interviewed the teen, she told them she had sex with Mecham on several occasions beginning when she was 15 or 16 years old. They also “smoked methamphetamine every time they had sex.”

The girl told police at one point she felt pressured to have sex with Mecham because he allegedly told her if she didn’t, he “would hunt her down.”

Mecham was charged with aggravated sexual extortion, distribution of a controlled substance, several counts of unlawful conduct with a minor, enticing a minor and child endangerment.
