Crisis lines see spike after Kavanaugh/Ford testimonies

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – Utah’s Rape Recovery Center has a crisis line, and they report a “201 percent increase in call volume yesterday” after the emotional testimony involving Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and judge Brett Kavanaugh.

“It’s hard for people to fathom how much courage that takes,” said Mara Haight, executive director with Rape Recovery Center.

“Many survivors are re-living their experiences right now as they hear her words,” added Haight.

News4Utah also reached out the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, who reported an increase in their crisis line, as well.

“There’s a lot of reflection, and pain, and sadness, said Haight.

On the website for Rape Recovery Center, they have a designated section for those who are hearing about sexual violence in the news–specifically, in the context of Thursday’s testimony.

“The reality that people are reaching out, is good,” said Haight.

“The fact that people are experiencing an increase in pain, and suffering, because of some of these conversations is difficult.”
