UPDATE: Kennecott ‘incident’ under investigation

TOOELE, Utah (ABC4) – An investigation is now underway following an incident that sent black smoke billowing out of the Kennecott Smelter near Tooele on Tuesday.

At around 11 a.m., Unified Fire confirmed their crews were working with crews at Kennecott to address “an active incident.”

Unified Fire has not released any additional details but Rio Tinto released the following statement Tuesday evening:

“[Tuesday] at approximately 7:30 a.m., an incident occurred at the Kennecott Smelter that resulted in a cloud of visible smoke. There were no injuries and all personnel are safe. The situation is contained, and the public, nearby facilities, and surrounding areas are unaffected. A thorough investigation is now being conducted.”

TOOELE, Utah (ABC4) – Fire officials are working with crews at Kennecott on “an active incident.”

Unified Fire reports information is limited at this time but say no injuries have been reported.

The incident is currently under investigation and there is no threat to the public or surrounding area.

ABC4 is working to gather additional information.
