UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) A man and a woman are dead after they jumped into the Provo River to rescue a 4-year-old girl Monday afternoon.
According to Utah County Sheriff’s Office, 4-year-old London DeDios fell into the Provo River near Bridal Veil Falls.
Brenda Dedios, 34, London’s mother, tried to rescue her daughter from the river. Sean Thayne, 30, of Sandy, was a stranger who also jumped into the river after the child.
Both of them were pulled out of the river near the Murdock Diversion Dam, nearly three miles from where they entered the river.
Brenda and Sean were taken to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo in critical condition. A short time later they were pronounced dead.
At least four other adults also jumped in the water in an effort to rescue London and they we able to get out of the river safely, with one of them suffering a knee injury.
The full scale effort has been called off for the night, but several teams well remain at the river in different locations over night in case they might be able to see London.
At about 7:00 Tuesday morning, the full scale search effort will resume. Officials with Central Utah Water Conservancy District will reduce the flow coming out of Deer Creek Reservoir in order to lower the level of the Provo River. This will expose many areas where a person could be caught up and will aid in the search effort.
