Conjoined twins get custom made bouncer made in Salt Lake City

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) — Conjoined twins from Blackfoot, Idaho will be able to learn to stand, walk and play because of a special bouncer made right here in Salt Lake City.

It may sound like a simple thing, but it could be life changing for the babies who have quite the challenge ahead of them. Nine-month-old conjoined twins, Callie and Carter Torres, are getting outfitted with their new bouncer designed just for them. The twins will have to get used to the sensation of being on their feet, and this device will help them.

Callie seemed fine with the new contraption, Carter on the other hand wanted nothing to do with it.

“It is to get them standing up. Kids their age are typically sitting up. They are not able to do that independently. They can get the strength they need,” said Kevin Christensen, occupational therapist.
Kevin Christensen, an occupational therapist with UCAT: Utah Center for Assistive Technology, designed the jumper.
“Hopefully they’ll get the balance and figure out this is my sister and this is my other sister. They’ll have to work together and move this way to get that way and they we can work together,” said Chelsea Torres, mother.

The precious miracles wouldn’t be here today had Chelsea and Nick listened to nearly two dozen people tell them they should have aborted them.

“We stuck it out. Who wants to give up on their own two kids? I can’t describe in words the level of happiness,” said Nick Torres, father.
The Torres family will be back many more times in the future. They’re bouncer will need adjustment and may need help as the kids grow with other devices to help them become more independent.

The $400 bouncer was paid for by grant money which the family qualified for. UCAT is part of the state agency: Workforce Services and helps people with disabilities to become more independent.
