PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (ABC4 News) – A community is mourning after the death of a 12-year-old Pleasant Grove boy who was hit in what police are calling a tragic accident.
It happened Monday night at the intersection of Pleasant Grove Boulevard and State Street.
A heartbroken community has begun visiting the intersection to honor 12-year-old Michael Madsen.
“It could have happened to all of us…all of us moms feel that raw ache,” said resident Emily Hickok. She said her heart is breaking for Michael’s mother.
Michael was hit and killed while crossing the street. He was walking home from a movie with friends.
“We try to be united on things like this….and it’s just devastating this morning. We came home from a party and we saw it and it was just so hard to witness it…and it’s just devastating,” said Hickok.
Police said a construction truck traveling southbound on State Street turned right on red and the driver did not see the boy. Police from all around Utah County responded to the scene.
“We’ve had just such an outpouring from the community…so many people are hurting for this family,” said Captain Britt Smith, Pleasant Grove Police Department spokesperson.
Police said they did not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in this case.
The family is taking donations via Venmo to help with funeral costs under the name MichaelDominicMadsen.
