‘Code to Success’ is giving students a head start on their career

SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4 Utah) —  Several hundred students got a head start this school year taking advantage of a free computer coding camp this past summer.

‘Code to Success’ is a 9 week course, free of charge to students. In its second year, the program is seeing a lot of success.

Joni Frodsham, 17, “at first, I wanted to work with computers all the time and type really fast and do cool stuff.”

“it’s fun. I’ve got a coding brain.”

At times, you might think she’s speaking a foreign language, one that Joni knows like the back of her hand.  

“Ruby on Rails includes html, java script, all you need to design a website and we did all that in one summer.”

Nearly 400 teens across 10 school districts in the state participated in ‘Code to Success.’

Students such as Joni found tremendous focus even deciphering her future.
” know what I want to do now. I didn’t know before. I didn’t know until the last week that I wanted to do web design. It would’ve taken longer and I would’ve switched majors a few times.”

One goal of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is to push more girls into these types of programs that bridge the gap between education and technology focused careers. Last year only 8% of their students were female, this year it was 25%.

Jonie, “Everyone treats women in tech like they’re special, not for web design, my hard work and skills but because I’m a woman. I don’t think it shouldn’t be like that, I want to be known as a person in tech and that should be enough motivation for young girls to go in tech and make a difference. If I can do ‘Code to Success’ I can do whatever.”

The Garff Foundation is a major sponsor along with several others. Tech companies have also partnered with the program and serve as mentors.
