City eyes land near St. George airport for development

Local News

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 News) Washington City taking a lot of land with some big plans.

Right now, the more than 700-acre parcel between the St. George Airport and the fast-growing Southern Parkway is pretty quiet.

Washington City wants to see it used for industrial development, maybe a so-called mega-site, which requires at least $1 billion in investment and 1,000 jobs.

The city’s economic development director Matt Loo says it’s a great site being so close to the airport, and far enough from other things.

“Away from the community, from homes, from residents…it makes it attractive for maybe some industrial, or maybe some high end, uh, manufacturing, maybe some technology uses,” said Loo.

Loo says he does not see housing as a part of this. Rather it’s an opportunity to invest in infrastructure for the future. Right now, the land is part of unincorporated Washington County.
