DAVIS COUNTY (News4Utah)- The Centerville Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Officer Jason Read, 40, had been in the hospital since September 23rd after he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle.

Centerville Police Chief Paul Child said Read had been making headway in his recovery, but “unexpectedly passed away” Tuesday morning.

He leaves behind a wife and three kids.

Officer Read began his career in law enforcement with Centerville Police in 2005. He was currently assigned to patrol as a Police Officer III and Field Training Officer. Child said Read was off-duty at the time of his accident.

Chief Child said Read worked with a  K-9 officer for three years and was also assigned to the Problem Oriented Policing unit for a portion of his career where he worked on a wide variety of community crime-related issues.

“Officer Read had an incredible memory for names, faces, license plate numbers and other important information that made him a very effective officer. [He] was the recipient of many awards and decorations and was a positive influence in many lives of those he served in the community as a police officer,” Chief Child stated. “We are all deeply shocked and saddened at his passing.”

Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Updates will be posted when they become available.
