CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) A Cedar City man is facing a judge charged with raping a child under the age of 14.
Pedro Gaspar-Martin, 18, made his initial appearance at district court Wednesday afternoon after a pregnant 14 -year-old girl told police he was the father of her baby.
“He made some admissions, and he was booked on those charges.”
The girl, now 14, was 21 weeks pregnant when Cedar City police were called by the Department of Family Services to investigate.
“When they did the math they figured out that she was 13 years old when the baby was conceived,” said Sgt. Jerry Womack with Cedar City Police Department.
Police say that in separate interviews, both the girl and Gaspar-Martin, called each other boyfriend and girlfriend. Police say Gaspar-Martin admitted, through an interpreter, to an ongoing sexual relationship with the girl since she had been 13 and knew he was the father of her baby.
“Given the age, you know, children that young they just can’t consent to sex,” said Sgt. Womack.
Gaspar-Martin was charged with the rape of a child under the age of 14, sodomy of a child and sexual abuse of child.
He’s being held on $100,000 bond because, police say, they’re concerned.
“He’s from Guatamala, he had indicated he had planned a trip back to see his family. That trip was planned before all of this took place, but we were just worried he might pose a flight risk,” said Sgt. Womack.
In court Wednesday the judge set a preliminary hearing for May 31. The charges against the 18-year-old could mean 25 years to life in prison.
