PROVO, Utah (ABC4 News) – On Saturday morning the cougar athletics department held the first ever Lavell Edwards Memorial Heart and Soul 5 kilometer fun run and walk on school’s campus in Provo.

Organizers say over 300 people participated in the race which was started as a way to honor the memory of the man who led BYU to 257 wins from 1972 to 2000, including the 1984 national championship. Edwards passed away almost 2 and half years ago, according to officials.

Kyle Wilson, the race director said, “LaVell passed away from heart disease and that is why we’re called the Heart & Sole 5K and it’s something that we partnered with Intermountain Healthcare and Utah County Hospital and their cardiovascular team and they’re here today putting on a heart health fair.

BYU athletes chipped in by setting up a special obstacle course for kids based on their particular sports.
