Brazen thieves make off with Macbooks from Sandy tech store

SANDY, Utah (News4Utah) – Sandy City Police are investigating after a pair of thieves walked into Expercom in Sandy, looked around, then swiped thousands of dollars in Apple products from the store.

“It’s annoying,” said store manager Jonathan Weiss.

The couple is seen in surveillance video talking to the clerk, asking about products, pretending to browse, then when the clerk’s back is turned, one of the suspects is seen pulling out wire-cutters to rip the merchandise off the display table. The pair runs out of the store in the video.

Outside, the Weiss was talking to an employee, when he noticed the couple run out and heard the theft alarm – which was activated as soon as the merchandise was taken off the table.

“Three computers – It’s about $5,500 in total. As a small business, it’s a big hit to us,” said Weiss.

Expercom bills itself as a premier Apple product seller.

The thieves likely won’t be able to do anything with the computers – they are remotely locked once stolen, Weiss said. They may try to sell them to a pawn shop or an unsuspecting buyer, who could be duped if the product isn’t inspected before a sale.

Weiss recommends anyone who buys technology products on the street come into a reputable tech merchant to perform the transaction and have an expert inspect the product before money is exchanged.

Sandy Police say the couple got away in a white Nissan. They are currently investigating.
