UPDATE: Officials have found a body believe to be that of missing hiker Derrik Jenkins Saturday afternoon near a trail above Granite Flat Campground in American Fork Canyon.

While it has not confirmed, Utah County Sheriff Lt. Spencer Cannon said it is believed to be Jenkins who went missing on October 31.

AMERICAN FORK, Utah (ABC4 News) – Search and rescue crews continue to search for a missing hiker in American Fork Canyon.

Utah County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the report of an overdue hiker. Derrik Jenkins, 28, of Pleasant Grove, told his family he was going hiking in the area of Box Elder Peak near Granite Flat Campground in American Fork Canyon.

Jenkins left and was last heard from Wednesday around 4:30 p.m.

A Forest Service employee found his car parked near Granite Flat Campground. Deputies say Jenkins was alone, but he is also an experienced hiker and trail runner.

His family is worried that while he would have been prepared for a shorter trek, he probably wasn’t equipped for multiple nights in the mountains.

Volunteers with Utah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team are working with help from a helicopter Utah Department of Public Safety and plane from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies say the weather has been a concern, but teams will continue the search.

This is a developing story. More information will be posted as becomes available.
