SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) UPDATE: The Salt Lake County DA announced the officer’s use of deadly force in the situation was “legally justified.”
Salt Lake City police released body camera footage of an incident where the suspect died saying the Medical Examiner confirmed the man shot himself.
It all started as a trespassing call, but police didn’t realize, how it would end. Salt Lake City police were attempting to serve an outstanding warrant on 35-year-old Michael Zahn.
Just moments before the body camera footage was taken, Zahn was kicked out Homewood Suites in Salt Lake City and accused of trespassing.
Caller: I’ve got some unruly guests…
Dispatch: OK, are they inside the hotel?
Caller: Yes, inside the room, not – not coming out.
Dispatch: OK, what room number, hon?
Police said in a news conference Wednesday that they’ve had nearly 9,500 calls of trespassing so far this year.
Already released surveillance footage from a building on Rio Grande Street shows the moments the officer fired two shots after Zahn fired one.
Police said he entered the building and later he was found with what is now determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“No rounds from an officer caused harm or injury to the suspect…these are the facts as we know them today,” said Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Ty Farillas.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. West Valle City police have taken the lead.
