CENTERVILLE (News4Utah) – Centerville Police Department released dash camera and body camera footage Thursday of an officer-involved shooting on July 4th, 2017. In the incident, Cody McCray was shot and killed by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper following a pursuit through Centerville and on Legacy Parkway.

“We did have information that he wanted to do suicide by cop which caused us pretty grave concern about what he would do to create a scenario in which we would be forced to do that,” said Centerville Police Chief Paul Child.

Police said McCray was heading towards the crowds gathered for the 4th of July parade. He defended the officer that fired, saying, “In this case, the belief was that the vehicle was being used as a weapon and started to move and that’s what prompted him to take that action to stop the movement of the car.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office said McCray had cocaine and morphine in his system at the time of the pursuit. The Davis County Attorney’s Office said it will not be prosecuting the officer who killed McCray, Sgt. Chamberlin Neff.
