SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – A new billboard has Utahns talking about the medical marijuana initiative. It uses scripture from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to urge voters to vote “Yes” on Prop 2.
Drivers saw advertisements on a few billboards in the valley that said, “All wholesome herbs hath God ordained for the use of man,” a quotation from a section of the Doctrine and Covenants commonly referred to as the Word of Wisdom.
The signs encouraged voters to vote “Yes” on Prop 2, the medical marijuana ballot proposition.
The advertisements have no attribution, so viewers don’t know who sponsored the ads, but the Lieutenant Governor’s Office says they don’t need it.
“There’s no requirement for someone doing an advertisement, telling someone to vote for or against a ballot proposition, that says they’ve got to disclose who’s paying for it; there is that requirement if they’re putting it out for a candidate, but not about a ballot proposition,” said spokesperson Justin Lee.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been very vocal in urging their members to vote “No” on Prop 2, but some church members believe the scriptures quoted in those billboards point to a clear yes.
