Attempted kidnapping stopped by parents

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) – Police say family members pinned down Steven Montoya and held him for police after he tried to take their 5-year-old girl. Officers say the family was at Liberty Park at 10:30pm Thursday when Montoya approached them, attempted to speak to them and gestured at the child. He then ran at her, arms out-stretched, and the family stopped him.

The family believes Montoya was intoxicated in some way because they could not understand what he was saying, but he was not charged with public intoxication.

Officers are grateful for the happy ending, but Detective Robert Chipping said, “Obviously I say good job, great for holding this person down and keeping them for police. My concern is when people stay past closing time at parks. There are going to be more dangerous situations at night when no ones around because criminals are going to look for opportunities where there’s more likelihood of them getting away with something.”

He says that the most important thing when it comes to the safety of the children is diligence. It only takes a moment of distraction for tragedy to occur.

“The suggestion is go to the parks when it’s time to and there are people around, and be vigilant, stay with your kids.” said Chipping.
