Ask The Authority: Autism awareness month

Local News

04/12/2018 – SALT LAKE CITY, (News4Utah) – In this week’s ‘Ask The Authority’ we spoke with Julia Hood, an autism expert from The Pingree Autism Center.

Some of the questions we asked were:

How do parents know if their child has autism?

  • Hood says there are a lot of early signs you can look for, mostly how your child interacts with you. For example, does your child engage when playing games such as peek-a-boo?

What do I do if my child has autism?

  • Hood suggest a visit to your child’s pediatrician for tests that would detect autism. A diagnosis can be detected as young as twelve months old.

Autism is a genetic disorder and there are no known signs you can do to prevent autism, Hood says. Evidence based interventions, environmental factors and research on prenatal factors are helping advance Utah.
