Appeals court grants stay for FanX company’s $4 million judgment

SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – A judge granted a motion by FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention to stay the judgment ruling from a lawsuit by San Diego Comic Con.

San Diego Comic-Con International won a lawsuit last year claiming the then Salt Lake Comic Con infringed on San Diego’s Comic-Con’s name.

Salt Lake City’s convention was renamed FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, but they were ordered to pay San Diego Comic-Con nearly $4 million.

The stay remains in effect pending appeal of the lawsuit.

In a statement Tuesday night, Dan Farr Productions said in part:

“We’re encouraged by the Ninth Circuit’s ruling and looking forward to proceeding with our appeal.  Based on the typical time for the appeal process in the Ninth Circuit… this stay will be in place for at least 2-3 more conventions before the final decision is reached (which we are hopeful will bring a positive outcome).”
