WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – An West Valley City man was stabbed in the face during an altercation with another male Saturday night in West Valley City.
Police in West Valley City were called to a residence at 5500 West and 4200 South on a report of a stabbing. When police arrived, they found a large amount of blood inside the home and a man had been stabbed twice, once in the neck and once in the face.
According to arresting documents, the victim told police he had been stabbed during an argument with another male. The victim had a large laceration on his cheek as well as a laceration across his throat.
Police located the suspect, 29-year-old Joel Valencia, still at the residence where the altercation took place. While speaking to police, Valencia said he had come over to the house to see his girlfriend and once he arrived, he was punched. Valencia said he does not remember anything else after that until he ended up outside when police arrived.
A female witness said Valencia was hit by the victim and a fight ensued. During the fight, the victim got up screaming he had been stabbed and ran out of the house.
Police found a folding silver knife on the front lawn with blood on it and took that in for processing.
The victim was transported to the hospital with substantial injuries and is going to need surgery. According to doctors the laceration on the victims neck was extremely close to the carotid artery in the neck.
Valencia was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor use of a dangerous weapon in a fight.
