CARBON COUNTY (ABC4 News) – U.S. Highway 191 is closed after officials say a double tanker rolled and spilled crude oil on the roadway.
It happened about 7 miles north of Helper on Friday morning.
The Utah DEQ said about 280 barrels of crude oil (around 5,000 gallons) was spilled on the road as a result of the rollover.
The Carbon County Sherriff’s Department said the tanker was carrying crude oil that leaked unto highway 191 at milepost 275. They advise that drivers avoid the area while crews work to contain the situation.
The Southeast Utah Health Department said drinking water is not affected. They are testing samples to make sure that water users downstream are not affected.
SR 191 will likely be closed for the remainder of today (Friday) and into tomorrow (Saturday). Please utilize US Hwy 6 and US Hwy 40 to get between Price and Roosevelt.— Utah Highway Patrol (@UTHighwayPatrol) May 3, 2019
