99-year-old woman held hostage during hours long standoff

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – Police have arrested an 18-year-old man after he held an elderly woman hostage in a home in West Valley City Saturday morning. 

Unified Police Officers said Freddy Velasquez, 18, was a suspect in a shooting in Magna and was being watch by the Metro Gang Unit near 2200 West 3500 South. Around 12 a.m., they approached Velasquez, who was holding a gun. 

Velasquez fled into a nearby home where he took a 99-year-old woman as a hostage. SWAT and Unified Metro Gang Units worked for several hours to negotiate with the man. At approximately 3:30 am he released the woman unharmed.

Two hours later, Velaquez  was taken into custody at 5:20 AM. He is currently being booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
