5th annual Salt Lake Comic Con promises to be the biggest and best yet

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News)  – It’s the night before 2017 Comic Con kicks off and all eyes are on the Salt Palace for the fifth annual edition of this ever expanding pop culture convention.

Dan Farr is the co-founder of Salt Lake Comic Con.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be our best show yet,” Farr told ABC4 Utah News Wednesday. “We try to incrementally grow every year and get a little more new features here or something different. We’ve done that but we also have a lot of vendors. We’ve had more vendors at this show than we’ve ever had before.”

Most people probably want collectibles that are actually valuable like sofubi, according to John Brummett of the collectible toy company Pop Life Mindstyle.

“They are the number one collectible item in Asia right now,” Brummett said. “The sofubi line is. Sofubi literally stands for soft vinyl so that’s what the products are made out of and they’re based on Asian creatures of myth and legend.”

There’s a place on the show floor where you can check out some Subarus…and even a Harley. Harley Quinn from the movie “Suicide Squad” that is.

With the recent loss of the huge twice-yearly Outdoor Retailer Show, Comic Con and it’s Spring event Fan X are important to the Downtown economy.

“Comic Con or any other event that’s happening Downtown is good. We love it when people come into our capital city and have a good experience,” Nick Como of the Downtown Alliance said. “While it’s not an out of town convention that has the hotels and the food component to that level it’s still a great thing for our city and it’s a great thing for our community.”

Farr says it’s become a nationwide event.

“For the most part we get somebody from every state of the United States coming to our event and outside of the country,” Farr said. “So we really have become a Comic Con hub event and we bring in people from everywhere.”

Notable celebrities scheduled to appear include Dick Van Dyke, Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, John and Joan Cusack, Rob Schneider, Corbin Bernsen and Val Kilmer.
