41 people being treated for possible rabies exposure after bat infestation

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- Forty-one people are being treated for possible rabies exposure due to a bat problem at West high School.

The school closed their doors briefly last week “until it [was] determined that all the bats have been removed and access points into the school [were] secured”.

School officials say they are working with the Salt Lake County Health Department to identify students who may have been in contact with any of the bats. They say the health department will contact parents. The health department says the number of those being treated may increase slightly if additional people who were exposed come forward.

“The SLCoHD and the West High School administration are committed to providing a safe environment for our children…the safety of your students is our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding and patience as this issue is resolved,” a letter to parents read.

Also students, if you’re reading this–we appreciate the pictures, but don’t touch the bats!!
