RIVERTON, Utah (News4Utah) – A toddler died after she was found unconscious in a swimming pool in Riverton.
Unified police confirmed 3-year-old Riley Northrop* died Monday evening after she was rushed to the hospital Sunday morning.
Police said the Riley went outside without her parents’ knowledge and climbed into their neighbor’s swimming pool before she was found unconscious.
She was transported to Riverton Hospital and then Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition where she later died.
“Our hearts go out to the family during this very difficult time,” said Unified Police Department in a tweet.
They say her family has decided to donate her organs.
The incident and another near-drowning over the weekend prompted health officials to remind parents about pool safety. The family is asking other parents to always keep their eyes on their children, especially around water.
*Editor’s note: Police originally reported the child was 2 years old.
