SANDY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy and his father were taken to the hospital after an accidental shooting in Sandy Saturday night.
Sgt. Jason Nielsen Sandy City Police said they were called at about 9:45 p.m. to a house party in Sandy where a firearm was being handled by others.
The firearm, a 9mm handgun, discharged and struck a 3-year-old boy in the arm and his 28-year-old father in the leg. Both the boy and his father were taken by ground ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives are still looking into the case to determine how the shooting happened but Nielsen said the person handling the gun did not know it was loaded.
Currently no charges have been filed.
Nielsen said this is a good reminder for others to treat firearms with very strict control. Anytime you are handling guns to assume they are loaded and keep your finger off the trigger.
