SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – Two people were critically injured after driver loses control of van and hits pole on the freeway in Salt Lake City Friday night.
Utah Highway Patrol said at about 5:35 p.m, a man driving a Chrysler Town and Country minivan was traveling on the transition ramp from I-215 southbound to SR-201 westbound when he went off the left shoulder and side-swiped a traffic camera pole.
The driver was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition by ambulance. A passenger, sitting directly behind the driver, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown around in the vehicle and received severe head trauma. That individual was transported by helicopter to the University of Utah hospital.
A third passenger in the middle row, sitting on the passenger side, was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.
Police discovered some marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.
The ramp was closed temporarily to land the helicopter and to investigate the scene but has since been re-opened.
