BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC4 News) – Two high-profile abduction attempts in Utah over the last two weeks have turned out to be false.
Outside South Davis Junior High, a girl told police a man approached her and grabbed her.
But, police say, her story turned out not to be true.
“In any of those cases, we are going to treat them with all of the seriousness that they deserve,” said Lt. Dave Edwards with Bountiful Police Department.
“What’s difficult is when you find out that this report is false. And then, you realize you’ve taken all of these resources that could have been used for these legitimate victims — these people who have been injured, who have had their property stolen, no matter what the case may be. The resources that didn’t go to them went to a false report.”
Police say it’s not up to them to decide whether charges get filed — that decision is up to the prosecutor.
Bountiful Police say they’ve investigated roughly 100 false reports over the last four years.
