17-year-old babysitter arrested on child abuse homicide charges

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – A 17-year-old boy was arrested after a child died in West Valley City Tuesday. 

West Valley City emergency crews responded to the area of 4600 South 2800 West on the report of an unconscious child. The child was rushed to the hospital via medical helicopter.

Police say despite medical efforts at the scene, Jaycieion Sanchez, 21 months old, did not survive.

Police say the toddler had been home with a sibling and a babysitter. Responding officers say they saw multiple visible injuries that “were not consistent with statements given by the babysitter regarding the circumstances of the child’s death,” according to statement released Wednesday.

West Valley City Police Department’s Public Information Officer Roxeanne Vainuku shares more information about the investigation.

The babysitter, the toddler’s mother and grandmother were all questioned by police. The babysitter, a 17-year-old boy was eventually booked into Salt Lake Valley Detention on child abuse homicide charges. The suspect’s name is being withheld since he is a minor. 

Investigators are working with the Utah Division of Child Family Services regarding the circumstances of this case.  Police say the investigation is ongoing. 

The child’s family has set up a GoFundMe page for help with the sudden funeral expenses.
