1 dead, 2 injured in West Valley City shooting

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – Police are still searching for suspects after a shooting in West Valley City left one man dead and two others injured.

This all unfolded Tuesday afternoon near 3300 West Parkway.

Police have not released much information because the shooting is still under investigation, but at this point they have no suspects in custody.

A brother of one of the victims tells News4Utah it was his uncle who was killed and that he had just arrived in town. He also says he had no connection to what unfolded.

“In the house watching TV And we heard like five gunshots,” said John Kernes, neighbor.

Neighbors were scared when they heard the multiple gunshots ring out. Then confusion as police rushed on scene not knowing who they were looking for.

“Chaos. Cops everywhere. Cops still coming. Guns everywhere, yeah guns everywhere,” said Bonnie Vazquez, neighbor.

Residents admit incidents like this have happened before.

“I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 15 years and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened,” said Vazquez.

First responders rushed two of the shooting victims to a nearby hospital, but third man on scene died.

It took officers a while to clear the scene because they didn’t know if the shooters were in another apartment at the complex.

“We’re dealing with multiple units a lot of people in one area. So when our officers arrived on scene there were a lot of doors. A lot of doors where people could be. So, it took a little bit to clear the scene and make sure it was safe,” said Roxeanne Vainuku, West Valle City Police spokesperson.

Investigators are releasing few details as they search for possible suspects. It’s unclear if this shooting was gang-related.

That brother tells us they were taking care of some business with other people when the shooting began. He says he believes multiple people were involved, but police have been unable to confirm if it was one or multiple suspects involved with his shooting.
