Man in custody after shots fired at a Layton apartment complex

LAYTON, Utah (ABC4 News) – Officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Sterling Point apartment in Layton.

Officers say the incident happened at about 6 p.m. near 1575 West and 1600 North.

It started with a verbal altercation between two adult men which turned physical, according to police.

During the altercation, one of the men pulled out a gun and officials say both men began to struggle with the gun resulting in shots being fired.

Neither of the men was hit by the shots and officials say they separated once patrol officers got to the scene.

Witnesses told police that they saw the other man go back into his apartment. Officers say they tried to contact him but he didn’t comply.

While officers were trying to get the man out of the house they said a woman called them and said she was on the phone with the man they were trying to get out of the house.

The man told them he was not going to come out of the house which prompted police to call out a SWAT team.

Officers continued to negotiate with the man until they say he eventually came out and was taken into custody.

The cause of the altercation is not known at this time. Investigation into the incident is still ongoing, according to police.

More information will be provided as it become available.
