KANAB, Utah (ABC4) The city of Kanab in Southern Utah is preparing for the funeral of a spokesman of the armed group that took over an Oregon wildlife refuge last month.
LaVoy Finicum was shot and killed by police near Burns, OR.
The funeral is expected to bring in mourners from across the region. But just how many people remains unknown Thursday.
“We’re planning on a good number of people to be there,” Kane County Sheriff Tracy Glover said.
Parking and traffic around the church is expected to be heavy, which is why Glover has extra law enforcement officers coming to help. They’ll also be on hand in case anything goes wrong.
“We’ve looked into the situation as best we can. We’re not aware of any credible threats to the community or any individual person in the community,” Glover said.
Ahead of the funeral, the Bureau of Land Management has closed the Kanab field office Thursday and Friday.
In a statement, the agency said, “…given the events scheduled over the next few days in Southern Utah, BLM decided to exercise an abundance of caution and temporarily close our offices in Kanab.”
The Kane County School District is also closing at noon Friday.
