SLOAN, Iowa (ABC4 Sports) – West Jordan’s Jose Haro scored an 8th round knockout over Daniel Franco in a stunning upset to win the USBA featherweight title at WinnaVegas Casino Arena in Sloan, Iowa.
Haro (14-1-1) is now expected to get a shot at the IBF world title sometime in the next few months.
Franco came in as the heavy favorite with a four-inch height advantage, but Haro landed an overhand right 2 minutes and 43 seconds into the 8th round that floored Franco and caused the referee to stop the fight without even delivering a 10-count.
This comes just 20 months after Haro was shot in both feet in the parking lot of a Walmart by Cole Shields, who later turned himself into to police and is currently serving time in jail.
But after three surgeries, Haro was able to get back in the ring and now has won a boxing title.
“It’s a tough fight, but I do visualize winning this fight,” Haro said before the fight. “I just want to come home, seeing my family at the airport greeting me and hugging my kids, and just telling them that daddy did it.”
