How Do You Get Rid of Super Lice?

News

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) – A new study shows super lice, or lice resistant to over-the-counter medication, has been found in 48 states including Utah. The study was published in march by the Journal of Medical Entomology, but now that it’s back to school time more people are paying attention.

That itching and scratching, the telltale sign that your child may have little critters crawling around on their scalp. Nothing to be scared of, but it may take a little more to get rid of them.

“Head lice is nothing new, it’s been around for centuries,” said Rebecca Ward with the Utah Department of Health “The unfortunate part, since it’s been around so long we’ve used some of our medications for a long period of time and some head lice are becoming more resistant to some of those commonly used over-the-counter medications.”

Sure they’re a nuisance, but head lice don’t spread disease which is why children are no longer required to stay of out school if they have lice.

“It’s not recommended by the Centers for Disease Control or even the American Academy of Pediatrics to exclude a child from school or child care because they have head lice or even nits,” explained Ward.

Ward says all you have to do is treat the head lice, and you should start with the over- the-counter options. “Unless it’s been shown to be resistance in a community there’s really not a need to go to a health care provider and try to get a prescription medication,” said Ward. “If the over the counter treatments aren’t working then by all means contact your health care provider, your pediatrician and see what kind of medicines they can provide.”

Experts say if your child has lice you should also wash the sheets, pillow cases and child’s clothing, but there’s no need to chemically treat your home.
