Home burglarized during craigslist sale

SANTA CLARA (News4Utah) – Two people are behind bars in southern Utah after police say they burglarized a home of someone they met on Craigslist.

It happened in a quiet neighborhood where someone selling their truck online. Police say a man and woman with a 7-month-old baby purchased the vehicle and then took off with much more.

“After they sealed the deal, signed the title, the female Miss Adams distracted the home owner, and at some point … Mr George had burglarized the home,” said Sgt. Jaron Studley with the Santa Clara – Ivins City Police Department.

Police say the victim was unaware he had been burglarized until after the couple left his house.

“They had taken some safes, they’d taken some cash, they’d taken some jewelry, a total of over 5,000 dollars,” said Studley.

When the victim realized what happened he called police, and the couple was stopped near the Utah Arizona border.

“Officers arrived and observed the two safes that were taken from the home in the back,” said Studley.

Police say a search of the vehicle uncovered the victims belongings. As online sales become more common, police suggest meeting in public places.

If you’re uneasy about meeting with someone there are always smarter ways … contact police to see if we can do a civil standby, you can do these at City Hall in the parking lot, you can do these at a Fire Station. … If you’re feeling uneasy, there is probably a reason why,” said Studley.

The investigation is still ongoing and more charges could be filed due to evidence that police say leads them to believe there could be more victims.

The couple also faces aggravated child abuse for using their baby as a prop and having the boy at the crime scene. Police say the baby is currently with the Department of Child and Family Services.
