UTAH COUNTY, (ABC 4 Utah) – An armed robbery in a Walmart parking lot sent police on a high-speed chase into Salt Lake County.
Authorities say the situation started in American Fork with a young, unsuspecting Walmart shopper.
“She was loading groceries into her car, when she was approached by an individual… He informed her if she didn’t give him her purse that she was going to get hurt,” said Lehi City Police Lt. Toby Peterson, adding that the woman saw a knife in the suspect’s hands.
Police say that woman did the right thing by handing over the handbag. After that random robbery, the thieves reportedly took off and did not waste any time.
“The credit cards that had been stolen were being used at Lowe’s and Walgreens in Lehi,” Peterson said.
Lehi authorities found four suspects in the Lowe’s parking lot but say they only had time to arrest two, before the other two fled the scene.
Officials say the criminals hopped in a getaway car and led officers on a high-speed chase along I-15 Northbound.
After pursuing the car for about 10 miles, police decided the chase was not worth the risks and dangerous conditions they were up against.
“They have to take into consideration a number of different things — traffic conditions, road conditions,” Peterson explained.
Peterson says right as officers were terminating their pursuit, the suspects crashed their own car and unsuccessfully tried stealing someone else’s at the 14600 S. freeway off-ramp.
“[The two remaining suspects] were both booked into the Utah County Jail,” Peterson said.
Police identified the suspects as Halee Spencer (23), Adam Arcaris (33), Mallori Carver (27), and Chaz McCusker (28). They say they were all staying in a room together at the Super 8 Motel in Lehi, where investigators later served a search warrant and found drug paraphernalia among other things.
