So much of the holiday season revolves around warm meals and tasty treats, but did you know one in seven Utahns are at risk of going hungry each day? According to the Utah Food Bank, one in five children do not know where their next meal will come from.
The need to feed is real, which is why Smith’s Food and Drug stores is now partnering up with the Utah Food Bank to give people an quick, easy way to give back this holiday season.
All Smith’s customers need to do is simply indicate that they would like to donate while checking out. The cashiers will give customers the option of giving $1, $5, or $10. That money will then be converted into Smith’s gift cards at the end of the season, and the store will sell the Utah Food Bank any needed items at wholesale cost, allowing them to really stretch each donated dollar. You can also contribute online here.
You can also help out at most grocery stores across the state (including Smith’s) by dropping non-perishable food items into the big bins currently set out. Right now, the Utah Food Bank is particularly looking for child-friendly items to stock up on supplies for its Backpack Program, which allows schools to send lower-income students home with food on Fridays to make sure they have something to eat over the weekend.
