Fire breaks out at abandoned building in Brigham City

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (GOOD 4 Utah) – Residents in Brigham City living in a small apartment complex had to be evacuated Monday morning because of large fire burning next door. The blaze broke out at the old Baron Woolen Mills building located at 56 north 500 East.

“My boyfriend looked out of my front window and saw smoke. So I opened the door for my neighbor and he just pointed at the fire and was like ‘Look!’ and the fire was going right outside my living room window. So I grabbed my baby and got out of the house,” said Chasady Baumann.

Woke up by a neighbor pounding on her door, Baumann couldn’t be more grateful to safely escape from her apartment with her 10-week-old baby boy. “The EMT’s already checked him out and everything, he’s ok. He didn’t wake up at all, just slept like a baby,” said Baumann.

Another resident rushed home from work after learning about the fire from a friend, but only to be welcomed by smoke and ashes.

“We were on our way right here to Main Street when the whole Main Street was just filled with all kinds of smoke and you couldn’t see. I was just like, ‘Oh no!’,” said Rick Sandberg Jr.

Brigham City Fire Chief Joseph Bach says the blaze broke out around two in the morning. Their biggest focus was to protect the homes nearby, which already had embers landing on the roof of a multi-family complex.

“We ended up having to cut a hole in the roof over there just to make sure we didn’t have an extension into the attic space.” Chief Bach explained, “The challenging part now is digging out the bottom of this because there is so much debris piled up there from the previous fire, because this burned about a year ago.”

This is video of that fire about a year ago of the same abandoned building up in flames. A blaze residents remember all too well. “Yeah we thought about it we were like no way it’s gonna happen again, but there it is.”

Chief Bach said the fire last year was caused by arson, but this new fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross responded to those evacuated.
