(CNN) – A New Mexico father admitted to beating his 5-year-old daughter to death over homework, police said.
Albuquerque police said paramedics were called to an apartment complex on Amherst Drive at about 1 a.m. Saturday after the Sara Dubois-Gilbeau went into cardiac arrest.
“The injuries were not consistent with what they were told,” said Officer Simon Drobik.
Shortly before the girl died, police said her 36-year-old father, Brandon Reynolds told them she had heart problems, but they didn’t buy his story.
“It appears that this father brutally beat this child,” Drobik said.
Police said Reynolds later admitted to getting mad at his daughter late Saturday night when she didn’t want to do her homework.
This “triggered” him and he beat her up and down her body with a water shoe, police said.
“She loved pink purple and blue,” said a neighbor, who chose not to be identified.
Other neighbors are also in shock. They said Reynolds was strict and they knew he would spank the girl sometimes, but never in front of them.
But last night, neighbors said they heard a commotion coming from his apartment.
“She heard him yelling at her… then she came outside to take a breath and then that’s when she saw the ambulance,” a neighbor said.
According to police, the girl had moved back and forth from New Mexico to California for the last five years.
Reynolds does not appear to have a criminal record in New Mexico.
