East High wins first girls basketball state championship

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – The East High girls basketball team made history Saturday afternoon, winning its first ever girls basketball state championship.

Margarita Satini scored 17 points, while Blanche Pritchard and Lani Taliauli each scored 12, as the East High girls basketball team cruised past Timpview to win the 5A state title, 68-48.

The Leopards (23-2) raced out to a 22-point lead at the hlf as Taliauli and Satini each scored 11 points.

Timpview closed the gap to 14 points in the second half, led by 16 points from Shalyn Fano and Jazzy Espinoza.

But the Leopards shot 52 percent from the field and never trailed.

“We knew that we respected this team very well,” said Satini. “Just coming out, we were very determined. I didn’t know it was going to be like this, but I knew we’d pull through.”

“We kept telling the girls to keep staying aggressive,” said head coach Olosaa Solovi. “They were going to make a run. We didn’t think we’d keep this big of a lead, but we just told them I don’t care if we win by one point. I don’t care, just win by one.”

“It’s a dream come true,” said Taliauli. “All our blood, sweat and tears. All our early morning practices, everything we’ve done. Summer, spring ball, it all came true today.”
