ELKO COUNTY, Nev. (ABC4) – Authorities are investigating a shooting that left two people dead in Elko County on Tuesday.
The Elko County Sheriff’s Office says the double-fatal incident happened at a residence near the 700 block of Spring Creek Parkway around 4:59 p.m.
Deputies first received an emergency call reporting a domestic violence situation where shots were fired. Two children had ran to a neighbor’s house, saying their mother had been shot.
When authorities arrived, they discovered a woman, Cassandra Banuelos, 44, who was lying on the kitchen floor. Police administered life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers also found a man, Reuben Banuelos, 53, with “a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.” He was still breathing at the time so he was transported to a local hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The children have been placed into the custody of extended family during this time.
“The case is currently under investigation to determine a motive and to try and make sense of a senseless act of violence,” authorities say.
Police discovered the male had prior arrests including an arrest in 2014 for assault with a deadly weapon where he was found not guilty at trial.
“We ask that you respect both families’ privacy as they will all need time to heal,” says the Elko County Sheriff’s Office. “If you or someone that you know is suffering from domestic violence, please reach for out for help. There are resources in our community such as CADV (Committee Against Domestic Violence) and local law enforcement, we will do everything within our power to help you.
