Courts: Woman stabs husband, then herself in her heart during domestic incident

OGDEN, Utah (ABC4 News) – A woman is facing felony charges after police said she stabbed her husband and then herself during an altercation in April.

According to charging documents officers were called to a home in Ogden just after 4:30 p.m on April 30 on a report of a stabbing

When officers arrived they discovered a 24-year-old man had been stabbed in his back by his estranged wife Brittney Stark, 31, who also had a stab wound to her chest, documents state.

Both individuals were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The couple’s three minor children were also present.

The victim told officers he had recently moved out of the home and had come back to retrieve some belongings. When he arrived, they both went into the bedroom, and he sat on the bed facing the door while his wife sat next to him, documents state.

The victim said there was no argument as no words had been spoken between them, but he noticed his wife did not appear to be acting like herself. He described her as  “lifeless and zombie-like.”

According to documents, one of the couple’s children came into the room and the man said the woman “uncharacteristically exploded at him, and yelled at him to get out.”

He said she quickly grabbed the boy and took him out of the room.

He said when she returned to the room, she said nothing to him and hopped up on the bed, reached over her side and picked something up from the ground. He assumed it was something trivial, but told police all of a sudden, out of the corner of his eye, he could see her coming at him with a large knife, leaving him no time to react, documents state.

Documents stated the woman stabbed the man in the right upper back, then turned the knife on herself and stabbed herself in the chest.

The woman then removed the knife, threw it on the ground then fell back on the bed.

Documents state the victim then jumped on top of her and put his hands on her chest in an attempt to stop the bleeding and yelled for someone in the house to call 911. The victim kept pressure on her wound until police and medical personnel arrived.

Police interviewed the woman, but she told them she does not remember anything.

Doctors told officers the man had a punctured lung and Brittney Stark had a stab wound to her heart and had to undergo surgery.

Both were expected to make a full recovery.

Due to her injuries, the woman was not booked into jail. She has been issued a summons to appear in court.

Stark was charged Tuesday in Second District with four third-degree felonies, aggravated assault and three counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child.

A background check shows Stark has no criminal history in Utah.
