Brushfire Scorches More Than 30 Acres In Weber Canyon

WEBER CANYON (ABC4 Utah News) – A 4th of July wildfire in Weber Canyon was apparently started by a train.

Photos from Diana Windley show flames under a passing train along Interstate 84 near the Weber/Morgan County line.

The fire quickly spread up the mountainside to the north and west, growing to more than 30 acres. At last report Monday night, it was only 7 percent contained.

Crews from the Weber Fire District plus the Alta Hotshots, South Weber, Uintah and South Ogden Fire Departments totaling 75 firefighters attacked the fire on the ground Monday with hoses, axes, shovels and chainsaws while two water-dropping helicopters delivered soaking barrages from above and four tanker planes dropped fire retardant on the flames.

Smoke drifting over the roadway briefly shutdown Interstate 84 and just one lane was open on the westbound side of the Interstate for much of the afternoon and evening, creating a backup for miles.
