OREM, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – In a battle of state champions, Bingham High held off Orem to win the first high school football game of the 2018 season, 39-22.
Peyton Jones threw three touchdown passes in the first half, while Andrew Wimmer replaced the injured Braeden Wissler to rush for 106 yards and two touchdowns, as the Miners, the defending 6A champions, won their 28th straight game.
Orem, the defending 4A champs, closed an 18-point deficit to three, as USC commit Puka Nacua caught two touchdown passes from Cooper Legas, including an 80-yarder. Nacua finished the game with six catches for 165 yards and two scores.
Headed into the fourth quarter, clinging to a 25-22 lead, the Miners took control with touchdown runs from Wimmer and Raymond Lewis.
Wissler caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jones in the second quarter, but later left the game with a knee injury.
